On 22nd November 2011 the Northampton Best Bar None scheme held its awards ceremony at The Old Bank. 21 Pubs Clubs and Bars were accredited and the winners and runners up in each of 3 categories were announced. Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “We want an evening economy in Northampton that is vibrant and lively and also comfortable and safe for everyone to enjoy. Every one of these venues should be congratulated for going beyond what is expected of them and I know that their success is good news not just for their customers but for everyone who uses the town centre.” The Whitehills was named best pub, The Moon on the Square scooped the best town centre bar award while The University of Northampton’s Student Union took the award for best club/late night venue. Runners-up were the Swan and Helmet in the Mounts, Momo and NB’s Sports Bar. Fifteen other premises were also accredited. Each venue taking part was scored and judged by a panel of experts against a range of criteria, including having crime reduction measures in place, drugs recovery and seizure policies and CCTV coverage. Assistant Chief Constable Andy Frost from Northamptonshire Police said: “Best Bar None presents an opportunity for the licensed trade to reduce crime, especially violence and the fear of crime. The aim is to improve standards and create a safer environment for customers to socialise in and staff to work in. It is part of our strategy to reduce violent crime associated with alcohol and offers the licensed trade a significant opportunity to demonstrate the hard work and commitment they place into ensuring their premises are safe and friendly environments.” Northampton’s Best Bar None scheme was recently chosen as one of three finalists in the Most Innovative Scheme awards out of 95 schemes nationally. • Click here to see more images from the 2011 Awards evening • • Click here to see images from the 2010 Awards evening • • Click here to see images from the 2007 Awards evening •
